Materials are already in/on and around the body! At university i did biomedical material science, which basically covers all materials that are involved in medicine and health care, and there are alot!! contact lenses, plasters/bandages, replacement hips and even the systems that are used to get drugs to specific places in your body.

Materials can be used to replace parts of your body that have failed because of trauma, disease or old age. My degree project was on intervertabral discs, the cartilage between the bones of the spine. As we age we loose the water from the disc, which acts like a shock absorber for the spine. The material we were reseaching was a gel that would replace the water to get the function back!!

Personally, i want to make a biomaterial that can help a lot of people, if someone has back pain now because of intervertebral discs, the only options are surgical, which is really expensive, can have side-effects and takes a long time to recover from. Hopefully that answered your question, but let me know if you want me to clear anything up!

I’m not aiming to produce a material for internal use, but for external use. The one’s developed through this project, for clinical purposes, will be beneficial to patients (for instance better plasters, tapes to hold prosthetics in place etc).
